Italian restaurant in Shoreditch

The "Gloria" in London, England, is a lively and stylish Italian restaurant that is part of the prestigious Big Mamma Group, a French restaurant group specializing in offering authentic Italian cuisine in a relaxed yet extravagant setting. Located in the trendy district of Shoreditch, it was the group's first restaurant in the UK, opening its doors in 2019. With a capacity of around 172 seats, Gloria spans two floors and brings the charm of a traditional Italian trattoria with a touch of 1970s Capri glamour to London. It is known for its high-quality ingredients, sourced exclusively from 180 small producers in Italy, as well as its vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Authentic Italian cuisine London

The decor of Gloria is a real eye-catcher and contributes significantly to its character. The restaurant was inspired by the concept of an "all-day-long" trattoria, which is cheerful and lavish during the day, but funky and lively in the evening. The interior combines vintage elements with a touch of kitsch: striped walls reminiscent of the Italian coast, elegant marble surfaces, mirrored accents, and fringed peach satin lampshades create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and modern. The lower level, accessible via a hidden staircase behind a curtain, opens up to a seductive red room that exudes a glamorous, almost cinematic ambiance. This blend of retro charm and contemporary design makes Gloria a popular meeting spot for a diverse mix of guests – from young trendsetters to couples and groups looking for a special experience.

Vibrant atmosphere at Gloria restaurant

Culinary-wise, Gloria represents a blend of classic Italian cuisine and creative twists executed by a passionate team of young Italian chefs. The menu highlights the quality of ingredients, which are sourced fresh from Italy daily. A definite highlight is the *Carbonara al Tartufo*, served in a Pecorino wheel – a rich pasta with a creamy sauce, elevated by fresh truffles for a luxurious touch that impresses both in taste and presentation. Equally popular is the *Pizza Napoletana*, baked in a huge Marana oven specially imported from Italy, offering a perfect balance of crispy crust and soft interior with San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. For meat lovers, there is the *Cotoletta alla Milanese*, a generous veal cutlet served with a golden brown breadcrumb coating, winning with its simplicity and quality.

Italian trattoria with glamour

Desserts at Gloria are a chapter on their own and contribute to the playful, indulgent atmosphere. The *Tiramisu XXL* is a huge, creamy masterpiece dusted with a thick layer of cocoa powder, often celebrated as the highlight of the meal. The drinks are an experience as well: the bar offers a selection of creative cocktails reinterpreting Italian classics. The *Negroni* stands out here, with its perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness, while the *Bellini* with fresh peach puree offers a fruity, sparkling option. Wines come directly from Italian winemakers and complement the dishes perfectly.

Homemade Italian desserts London

Freshness and authenticity are highly valued at Gloria, with everything – from pasta to gelato – homemade. The open kitchen allows guests to watch the chefs at work, adding an extra level of liveliness and transparency to the experience. The service is another hallmark: the team, consisting of approximately 85 young Italians, brings infectious energy and warmth, often expressed through spontaneous singing like "Buon Compleanno" at birthday celebrations. There are also options for vegetarians and vegans, prepared with the same care, such as a pasta with seasonal vegetables or a creamy risotto variation.

The restaurant is known for its long queues, especially in the evenings, as it offers a mix of reservations and walk-ins – a sign of its popularity. The location in Shoreditch, a neighborhood full of creativity and urban flair, makes it an ideal destination for an evening after a stroll through the streets or before a visit to one of the nearby bars. Despite the hustle and bustle, the atmosphere remains warm and inviting, with attention to detail – whether in the decor, the ingredients, or the presentation – always at the forefront. Gloria is not just a place to eat, but an experience that transports guests into a world of Italian joy and indulgence.

After a nice little stroll around Shoreditch, my friend and I started looking for a good spot for dinner. Being a Thursday night, every place was packed, and finding a table last minute wasn’t exactly easy. We ended up at Gloria, where we were told the next available table would be at 9pm, an hour wait. Fine, we’ll take it. But then, they told us we had to book it ourselves through their website because they don’t take walk-ins… alright. We asked if they could just book it for us at the reception, but no, apparently, we had to do it ourselves since it required entering credit card details. Sure, whatever. But here’s the fun part: when we checked the website, there was actually a table available in 30 minutes. Strange how they somehow missed that. And when we booked it, we weren’t even asked for any card details. We decided to grab a drink at the bar while waiting, but before we even got our drinks, they suddenly told us our table was ready. Interesting, considering we were originally told there was more than an hour wait and almost made us leave. Anyway, we sat down, and within two minutes (literally before we could even take off our jackets), we were asked if we were ready to order. A little rushed, but okay. Ironically, once we were ready, getting a server’s attention was nearly impossible. Now, onto the food. Let’s just say it didn’t make up for the service. The mushroom and prosciutto bruschetta? Tasteless. The truffle croquettes? Just Parmesan with a weird bitter aftertaste. My friend’s pizza was decent, but my pasta with clams was a disaster, just bland and full of sand because, apparently, cleaning the clams wasn’t a priority. All in all, the experience was underwhelming. The food was average at best, the service felt rushed yet inattentive, and honestly, the whole place is just overrated.
